Sexual Assualt Awareness Month
With the ever-growing presence of online profiles, social media, and ways to connect with others, it is increasingly important to create safe spaces for all online. To do this, we need to become better at receiving consent for the words, pictures, and videos we share and respecting the boundaries of others. Unfortunately, sexual abuse can occur both in person and through a digital format.
The reality is that online sexual abuse is influenced by the same attitudes and beliefs that lead to sexual violence committed in a person. These shared risk factors include social norms that directly or indirectly condone violence; traditional harmful ideas about masculinity; and attitudes that devalue and degrade women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with disabilities, and other marginalized communities. A safe online space is one that is inclusive, where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.
What can you do to help prevent sexual abuse or harassment online?
- Start with your own online presence.
- Work to share content that is appropriate for all or share things within safe groups of people you trust. Remember, what goes online cannot come offline.
- Create a safe space within your online community.
- As an individual, we can step in when we come across problematic or harmful comments, behaviors, or content. We can also educate others and advocate for leaders to take meaningful action.
- Call out harmful behaviors you see from others.
- Report inappropriate content.
- Respond in a respectful way when you see hurtful comments.
- Show your support to victims of online harassment.
