Happy, Healthy Halloween!

Halloween is such a fun time! Dressing up, friends, fall, and best of all, TREATS! While getting treats is one of the most enjoyable parts of the holidays, it can come with some health hazards. Candy and sweet treats can make us feel sick, cause weight gain, and cavities!

Andrea Davenport, FNP

It was my delight to find fun recipes that our bodies and families can enjoy- here are just a few of the fun recipes we found online and made at home! Let me say—all of these were easy and fast. The hardest part was the grocery list! Even though these treats are healthy, just like with candy, all good things should be enjoyed in moderation.

Egg-cellent Ghosts

  • Eggs
  • Straw to hollow out eyes and mouths.

How to make: select the number of eggs you would like, place them in boiling water on the stove, remove after 20 min, let cool. Peel eggs. Make eyes, mouths. Refrigerate if not planning to eat right away.

Candy Corn Fruit Cups

  • Pineapple chunks, liquid drained
  • Cuties, pealed & separated
  • Light Cool Whip topping

How to make: layer pineapple followed by oranges with a layer of cool whip on the top. Enjoy!

Batty Guacamole Veggie Platter

  • Guacamole (homemade or store-bought)
  • Red pepper
  • Vegtables (carrot sticks, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, celery, etc.)
  • Blue corn tortilla chips

How to make: Put guacamole in a serving bowl, garnish with chips for wings/ears/eyes. Cut red peppers into tiny fangs add to the face of the bat. Add vegetables around the guacamole bat for everyone to eat and dip!

Monster Mash Apple Lips

  • Red Apples, sliced into wedges
  • Peanut butter
  • Mini marshmallows

How to make: Cut apples into wedged slices. Group slices into groups of 2. On one side of each apple slice, apply a layer of peanut butter. Stack mini marshmallows side-by-side to resemble teeth on the bottom “lip” and then add top “lip” once marshmallows are stuck into peanut butter on the bottom lip.

Carmel Apple Fries

  • Red Apples, sliced into wedges
  • Caramel dipping sauce
  • Peanuts, raisins, or chocolate chips to garnish
  • For fun: add plastic spiders. I only had pipe cleaners and made a pipe cleaner spider

How to make: Cut apples into slices, arrange them on a tray or plate. Drizzle caramel or other sauce (can try spider web design!), garnish if desired.

There are so many other fun options for “healthy” Halloween treats online! I chose a few I thought would taste great, be easy to make, and also be a fun family activity! These did not disappoint! Have a happy, HEALTHY, Halloween!

Holiday Management of Diabetes

Even when everything goes according to plan, the holidays can be stressful. We get out of our usual sleep and work patterns, we may travel, eat out more, attend parties, have house guests—all of which can disrupt normal routines and, consequently, may disrupt the management of diabetes.
